Remedies To Help Your Baby Sleep At Night

There will be times in your baby's very new, young life that you will need to help him to fall asleep, or go back to sleep if he has wakened in the night. It can be disconcerting for new parents when it becomes difficult to settle your baby down for the night. A newborn baby will probably fall asleep most easily if he is rocked, or moved rhythmically. Patting him gently on the back also soothes some babies.

Music is also very soothing to a baby, newborn or a little older. Music from a CD or a tape player can be played at low volume, and this can be very comforting for your baby. White noise such as a fan in the room can also provide a comfortable, constant noise and might cover other louder noises that may be heard in the home. Sudden noises can be jolting, so while baby is sleeping, running the garbage disposal or vacuum cleaners for instance may not be advisable.



More than 90 percent of babies will be sleeping through the night at about three months old. This may sound encouraging, but even at this age we as parents are not out of the woods yet! Most children will have phases of sleeping comfortably for a few days or weeks, and then they will return to a late night feeding schedule. This may happen because of a growth spurt, or can even be due to the discomforts of teething. Sickness, ear infections etc. may also be a cause for restlessness and late night wake-up schedules.

At about four months of age, your child is more active and alert to what is going on around him. He may have a little trouble relaxing and falling asleep at the end of the day. Consistent bedtime routines, a warm bath and a feeding will all help to soothe and relax your baby at the end of the day. Remember to be consistent. This will end up being tremendously helpful for you, as well as for your baby!

At eight or nine months, your baby will most likely be taking a morning and afternoon nap and may be sleeping through the night without waking up for a feeding. As he is a little bit older now, he may wake up sometimes and cry for his parents. Separation anxiety is sometimes evident at this age. There are several remedies to help your child to sleep more securely during this time.

A soft blanket, or a stuffed animal may become a treasured bed-time companion. Your baby may want several of these soft toys or blankets. Some babies respond well to having their door cracked open at night, or to the glow of a very soft night light in their bedrooms. You can easily implement whichever of these techniques that works best for your child. It is also important that you give your child reassurance that you are still there if he wakes up at night.
